When your child is ill, there is nothing more important than ensuring they feel better as soon as possible. Rather than an ER or Urgent Care, your primary care Pediatrician is most often the best place to start when you have concerns. We are committed to serving our children and work hard to see your child with a same day appointment or the next day.
Common ailments that we treat include Streptococcal pharyngitis, Sinus infections, Viral upper respiratory infections and Viral pneumonia (including Influenza and COVID-19), Bacterial Pneumonia, Asthma Exacerbations, Rashes, Cellulitis, abdominal pain, constipation, urinary tract infections, minor injuries and sprains, etc.
In-office / same-day testing is available for Influenza and COVID-19 as well as Strep pharyngitis ( strep throat).
Occasionally, lab work may be required including blood or urine sampling and can be quickly done at one of multiple labs near our office (LabCorp and Quest) or at Methodist Kids Express. Blood work is not done within our office.
Imaging such as X-ray or ultrasound can also be done quickly usually through Methodist Kids Express or South Texas Radiology Imaging Center (STRIC) or the facility where your insurance would prefer.
In office treatments for some conditions are available including:
- Oral or intramuscular (IM) steroids
- Intramuscular injection of antibiotics
- Albuterol nebulizer treatments
- Antipyretics (fever reducers) and pain reducers
Of course, there are circumstances in which an Emergency room is the appropriate place for your child. These include, but are not limited to:
- Fever in a neonate ( temperature of 100.4 F or greater in a baby less than 1 month old)
- Respiratory distress
- Severe abdominal pain
- Severe allergic reaction / anaphylaxis
- Diabetic ketoacidosis in a known Diabetic
- Seizures
- Significant injury / lacerations or fractures
If you are not certain if an office visit is right for your child’s illness, give us a call and we will be happy to discuss it with you and direct you to the appropriate care.
